I am quite experienced in this warning technique as you are given the right to use it when you give birth. Unfortunately with permission to use it there are NO INSTRUCTIONS. What I mean is there are no guidelines like how fast or slow you can count to three; how many TIMES you can use this method within a certain given timeframe; what consequences of breeching the dreaded THREE might me; and what tone of voice is acceptable.
As you can see I have been thinking about this quite some time. You see even in my own household we have varied ideas of how the "1-2-3" works. My husband counts at a reasonable speed to allow the offspring to do what he has requested. I, on the other hand, count quickly but repeatedly when the desired result is not achieved.
When does our right to use this method to hurry our children into motion expire? Is there a certain age by which it becomes invalid? Is 15 too old? Can I use it on other children? I am a teacher, is in inappropriate to use it in the classroom and then blame in on "Oh sorry, I am a mom!"
Such a technique seems so simple on the surface however raises so many unanswered questions that using said technique seems futile.
Now what about the naughty corner?
It seems, that as a parent, we have various choices and unless used sparingly and routinely they will not work.
Does a naughty corner need to be in doors? In the dark? On a chair? Oh so many questions I cannot answer.
Maybe I will just stick to the old and reliable - albeit a wee bit variable - 1-2-3.
Enjoy your parenting.
